ACC and Dentistry
ACC is the government agency that compensates individuals who have sustained injuries through accidents. This includes dental injuries but not those that occur through eating.
When should I register?
Registration must be lodged with ACC within one year of the accident.
Why should I register?
Certain types of injuries to the teeth can have an effect some years after the accident, even though at the time of injury nothing serious is apparent. A tooth that has been knocked or fractured can eventually die requiring root canal therapy some time in the future. A portion of the treatment costs maybe claimable through ACC.
How much does it cost to register?
$95 for the consultation and report. ACC will refund you $62.53 (as at March 2009)
How much will ACC pay for my treatment?
This depends on the treatment required as a result of the accident. The Government has set the fees they will pay. Please note that the fees set by ACC do not reflect the full cost of the treatment
so you must pay the difference.
ACC covers approximately 40-60% of the total fee. Your dentist will give you an estimate of what you can expect back from ACC. If extensive treatment is required an application can be lodged for prior approval. ACC decreases the fees they will pay if the injured tooth has been previously restored or there is evidence of gum disease or tooth decay.
When do I pay?
Payment must be made in full by the completion of treatment to the injury. Our receipt and report are then forwarded to ACC.
How long does it take to receive the ACC refund?
We usually receive payment within 10-14 days and it is immediately posted to you.
