Regular Dental Exams at Blockhouse Bay Dental Centre

The majority of people need to see their dentist for an examination every six months. If you have great oral health, you may not need to go as often. If you have problems or medical issues that affect your oral health, you may require more frequent checkups. Seeing the dentist regularly is just as important as seeing your medical doctor.

What to Expect

Dr Peter Raymond given dental exam to patientAt Blockhouse Bay Dental Centre, we provide a gentle and thorough examination of teeth and gums, noting any changes from your previous visits. The inside of your cheeks, your tongue, and the floor and roof of the mouth are all checked for signs of oral cancer. Sets of digital X-rays are taken periodically to check for any problems that can’t normally be seen.

If we notice that you have a need for any further treatment, we’ll discuss all options with you to address it. We’ll write out a plan so that you know all costs involved and the details of each choice.

The Frequency of Examinations

How often you should go to the dentist will depend on several factors: your level of oral health, if you have gum disease and if you have any risk factors like few teeth left. With regular checkups, you can preserve the rest of your teeth for as long as possible.

Even those with dentures require examinations. Every 2-3 years, you’ll return so we can check your mouth for signs of disease such as oral cancer and to make sure your dentures fit comfortably. Ill-fitting dentures can cause a loss of bone in the jaw, which can alter your facial appearance.

Your Daily Routines

The most essential oral healthcare you can do at home is brushing and flossing, which will remove the plaque that causes decay. You should use a soft-bristled toothbrush with a head that is small enough to reach the back teeth. Your toothpaste should contain fluoride for an extra boost against decay.

You can floss with normal dental floss, interdental cleaners or interproximal brushes, which are available at our practice. These will remove the plaque that’s between teeth, easily missed by your toothbrush. With your home hygiene habits, regular checkups and eating a balanced diet, you’ll be sure to show off a beautiful smile for life.
